What's Cooking at the School District?

We're cooking up a storm at the Berkeley Unified School District. You can find information about our program, downloadable menu calendars, and food policies. We strive to create a set of menus and meals that are healthy, seasonal, delicious, and reflective of the ethnic diversity of the community as a whole.

In addition to providing our calendars online, we would like to let you know about the changes that are underway at every school throughout the district. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments we've made, including the following:

  • Salad bars in all of our schools
  • Removed 95% of the processed foods
  • Hormone and antibiotic free milk
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables served daily
  • Almost all of our food made from scratch
  • All bread and dinner rolls – organic
  • All other rolls – whole grain
  • 50% of the rice served is brown
  • Swipe card systems in almost all of our schools
  • A majority of our food is now purchased locally:
    • Breakfast pastries
    • Foccocia and Pizza
    • Sliced bread and dinner rolls
    • Sushi and Eggrolls
    • Salad Dressing
    • 25% of our produce
  • Organic Salad Bar at the High School
  • All hamburgers and hot dogs– natural and grass fed

We hope you will join us in helping your children make healthy food choices in school and at home. Together we can help and raise a new generation of healthier and better educated young people.

Bon appetit!
